Chatalbash Rug Company one of the early pioneers of Oriental Rug Importing in the United States was founded by Yohanna Chatalbash in the early 1920’s in New York City.
Thomas Chatalbash joined the firm in the 1950’s helping to establish The Oriental Rug Importers Association. During this time he introduced selling Oriental Rug restoration and cleaning supplies to the trade. From a few skeins of wool and a couple packages of needles sold to a few local repairmen the business grew to a national mail order business selling to dealers all over the country and the world.
Due to the growth of the supply business in the early 1980’s when Ron Chatalbash joined the firm, the two businesses separated. The supply business stayed in NYC moving to a ground floor showroom and the Oriental rug importing business moved to New Jersey becoming a founding member of ORICA.
Also at this time we became the distributor for Michael Halebian, Inc the largest supplier of Carpet Installation supplies on the east coast.
For the next 25 years Chatalbash Rug Company of NY Inc was the leading seller of Oriental rug and carpet supplies in the US as well as being the only carpet supply house in NYC.
After eighty years and three generations of proudly serving the Oriental rug and carpet trade. Chatalbash Rug Company of NY Inc closed its Manhattan location. However, we are pleased to announce the start of an exciting new company: Chatalbash by Costikyan Inc.
By combing four generations of the Costikyan family, a leader in the Oriental Rug Industry since 1886(Restoration by Costikyan), with three generation of the Chatalbash family we will be able to bring you the best in customer service and experience as well as providing you with the finest quality merchandise available. History of Restoration by Costikyan
The company founder, Siragan Kent Costikyan migrated to the United States in 1884 to continue his studies at Colgate Academy in Hamilton, NY with the intention of becoming a Minister.
When a NY dealer forfeited payment of rugs from his family’s business in Constantinople, he was instructed to reclaim the shipment. Siragan Kent sold the Oriental rugs to faculty members at Colgate Academy. The interest and demand for similar rugs inspired a shift in his professional direction.
In 1886 Siragan Kent Costikyan established the importing firm of Costikyan Freres in Rochester, NY. In 1900 he dissolved the importing firm and founded Kent Costikyan, Inc. in NYC.
The house that Siragan Kent Costikyan built was renowned for its collection of museum quality period carpets as well as its selection of 19th & 20th Century carpets from the Mid East, Far East and Europe. He also created a division which handled fine carpeting manufactured both in the US and abroad.
Clarke followed in his Father’s footsteps after his graduation from Yale in 1925. Both were highly respected experts in their field. Clarke was the outside consultant for both Parke-Bennet Galleries and the U.S. Customs for over twenty years.
The Costikyan heritage was passed on to June Costikyan, Clarke’s daughter and subsequently to her son Phillip. Both were trained by Armenian Artisans, who were employed for over 50 years in the family business.
Phillip inherited his family’s restoration facility and along with his Mother, continues to service the Kent-Costikyan clientele as well as the younger generation of collectors of fine antiques, modern carpets and decorative floor coverings.
Under Phillip and June Costikyan’s supervision, Restoration by Costikyan is regarded as New York City’s, and America’s, foremost expert on the care and restoration of fine floor covering.
